Duncan James added to Chicago at the Phoenix Theatre

Thursday, 6th Sep 2018

Since Chicago returned to the West End earlier this year it has boasted many familiar names in the role of Billy Flynn, with Hollywood star Cuba Gooding Jr. starting out in the role when it opened and Spandau Ballet performer Martin Kemp replacing him as its run continued.

Now, however, another familiar name has been revealed as Duncan James, formerly of the boyband Blue and also a star of Holloaks and West End stages, will replace Kemp in the role this September.

Chicago is the classic musical that has been entertaining audiences for decades, with its recent return to London emerging with much fanfare. Its story centres on the character of Roxie Hart, currently played by Alexandra Burke, who is thrown in prison in 1920s Chicago, the era of the ‘celebrity criminal’. There she teams up with Vaudevillian performer Velma Kelly and together they make their bid for freedom so that they can be in the spotlight for the right reasons. Along the way they recruit the sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn.

Duncan James, whilst best known for his time in Blue, has carved out a successful career on the stage as well, whilst also heading to the screen in television roles, making him another familiar face in the role of Billy Flynn. His most prominent West End credit is Legally Blonde The Musical when it ran at the Savoy Theatre, though he also made a previous appearance in Chicago when it ran in the West End a decade ago.

Chicago is set to continue at the Phoenix Theatre until early 2019 when it is replaced by the recent Broadway hit Come From Away, which is set to transfer to the West End following its high profile debut in New York. Come From Away deals with airline passengers stranded in Canada during the grounding of flights on 9/11.

Before then Chicago can still be seen at the Phoenix Theatre, however, as it completes its run there on Saturday 5th January 2019. Duncan James can be seen in the production from Monday 10th September 2018.
