Evita - Phoenix Theatre

Emma Hatton has been in the spotlight a lot over the years, with her high profile appearances in some of the West End’s most popular shows making her a familiar face for many theatregoers. This presence is revived once again in 2017 as she takes on the iconic role of Eva Perón in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita, returning to the capital for a brief summer run at the Phoenix Theatre.

She is joined by the acclaimed Italian singer Gian Marco Schiaretti in the role of Che and together they form the latest high profile duo to take on these roles. The last time the production was seen in the West End – at the Dominion Theatre in 2014 – it was Madalena Alberto and Marti Pellow that took on the same parts.

But then it takes some experienced names to bring these legendary roles to life on the stage, particularly as these are real life people. Eva Perón was the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 to 1953 (her death) and Evita covers her life story, chronicling her journey from the slums to becoming the husband of President Juan Perón. It was a journey that cemented her legacy, with charity work and activism ensuring she was a source of grief when she died of cancer at the age of 33, remaining an inspirational figure to this day.

This musical tells this story alongside some of theatre’s most recognisable songs, with the legendary Don’t Cry For Me Argentina known all over the world.

Its new appearance at the Phoenix Theatre means that it will be replacing the outgoing The Girls, the Gary Barlow & Tim Firth musical that chronicles the exploits of the famous Calendar Girls, who raised money for a hospital by posing nude. The Olivier-nominated musical is set to close its doors in July, leaving Evita to see out the rest of the summer.

It also means that another iconic musical returns to the capital so that this summer audiences have a range of legendary shows from which to choose, including this, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and others.

Evita runs at the Phoenix Theatre from Wednesday 2nd August 2017 (previews from Friday 28th July 2017) to Saturday 14th October 2017.
