Extensions for Phantom and Dreamgirls in the West End

Tuesday, 18th Oct 2016

The Phantom of the Opera - Her Majesty's Theatre

Today we detail the latest West End booking extensions as two popular shows add new performances that both take them to dates in 2017. The Phantom The Opera recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in the West End and its run of performances continues strong as it extends to October next year at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Meanwhile, upcoming show Dreamgirls has also added new dates ahead of its opening next month, extending to May 2017 at the Savoy Theatre.

Its 30-year milestone earlier this month makes The Phantom The Opera the second-longest running musical in London’s West End (the first being Les Misérables, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year). So this extension is the latest in a long line of them dating back to the 1980s when it first opened and demonstrates its enduring appeal, which continues even after all these decades.

It is set in the Paris Opera House where a mysterious phantom causes mayhem when his own desires are not met. When he falls for the beautiful singer Christine all hell breaks loose during the development of a new show.

The musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, has spawned a film adaptation and a stage sequel during its long run in the West End and on Broadway. It is now booking at Her Majesty’s Theatre for performances up to Sunday 15th October 2017.

Meanwhile, Dreamgirls’ extension is announced before performances have even started at the Savoy Theatre, indicating high ticket sales and confidence in the show ahead of its opening in November.

The Broadway musical, which was also adapted into a hit film in 2006, will star Amber Riley as Effie White in a story about the rise of a girl group called The Dreams. It also contains performances of musical numbers like And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going and Listen, amongst others.

Dreamgirls opens at the Savoy Theatre on Wednesday 14th December 2016 (previews from Saturday 19th November 2016) and is now booking at the West End venue for performances up to Saturday 6th May 2017.
