Extensions Roundup: The Tina Turner Musical and Chicago

Tuesday, 10th Apr 2018

It’s been a while since we reported on the booking extensions of some of the West End’s shows, but since 2018 began we have had word of two productions, both of which open in 2018, adding new dates at their respective homes. Tina: The Tina Turner Musical announced its new dates in January, whilst Chicago followed its lead in March.

Tina: The Tina Turner Musical has recently started its previews at the Aldwych Theatre, with its official opening taking place on Tuesday 17th April 2018, but even before it opened its doors in the West End, it was already generated large ticket sales, leading to an extension to October of 2018.

The show is the latest in a long line of jukebox musicals to appear in the capital, this time utilising the music of Tina Turner alongside a story that chronicles her rise to stardom. It means that audiences can experience this tale alongside the songs that have made internationally famous.

Tina: The Tina Turner Musical continues at the Aldwych Theatre and is now booking there for performances up to Saturday 20th October 2018.

Chicago, meanwhile, has also started previews at its home of the Phoenix Theatre, with its own official opening night taking place on Wednesday 11th April 2018. The production is the revival of the famous Kander & Ebb musical that has won many fans over the years and returns to the West End with Cuba Gooding Jr. in the role of Billy Flynn.

The story centres on Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who are locked in prison for murdering their husbands, making them celebrity criminals in 1920s Chicago. But they want to be in the spotlight for the right reasons, by becoming stars, so they recruit the sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn in their bids for freedom.

The production also stars the likes of Ruthie Henshall and Sarah Soetaert, amongst others, and has also generated high ticket sales since it was announced.

Chicago continues at the Phoenix Theatre and is now booking there for performances up to Saturday 6th October 2018.
