The American Clock - Old Vic Theatre

2019 is shaping up to be a great year for fans of Arthur Miller, with many of his well known plays making their way to capital, including All My Sons at the Old Vic Theatre. Amongst the productions on offer, however, there will also be a staging of his 1980 play The American Clock, running at the Old Vic from February 2019.

That show was announced earlier in the year but now we have word on the names set for the lead roles, with Giles Terera playing the characters of Arthur A. Robertson and Moe.

Rachel Chavkin directs a show that focuses on the members of the Baum family, whose lives have been upended as they lost everything at the hands of the stock market crash and the subsequent depression in the 1920s. They have given up their wealthy lifestyle in Manhattan and now live in Brooklyn and must face a new world with new ambitions and outlooks. The show is narrated by the son of the family, Lee Baum, with other family members like Moe Baum and Rose Baum appearing during the course of the show as well, all alternating through three sets of actors during each performance (with Terera rotating with John Marquez and Abhin Galeya).

One aspect of the show that many will anticipate is the music, which is said to take audiences back to the swinging style of the era, further providing an immersive experience.

And performer Giles Terera, an acclaimed actor who won the Olivier Award for his work in Hamilton, will contribute to this further. Whilst some of his accolades come from the aforementioned Broadway musical during its run in the West End, he has also been honoured for the likes of Avenue Q at the Noel Coward Theatre and Hamlet at the National Theatre. His other credits include The Tempest at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, The Book of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre, and Playboy Of The Western World at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.

Audiences can catch The American Clock when it runs at the Old Vic Theatre from Monday 4th February 2019.
