All About Eve - Noel Coward Theatre

It had been rumoured for some time that All About Eve, a stage version of the famous 1950 film, would be headed to the West End. Those rumours included rumblings of a director in Ivo van Hove and a star in Gillian Anderson, who would be taking on the lead role of Margo Channing.

Those rumblings have now been confirmed, with the production set to play at the Noël Coward Theatre from February, with Lily James playing the titular Eve Harrington.
All About Eve centres on the mentioned character of Margo Channing, a 40 year old performer whose Broadway career has brought her to her current situation – the arrival of the young fan Eve Harrington. But her appearance on the scene threatens to turn Channing’s life upside down.

The original film starred Bette Davis in the lead role and proved to be hugely popular with audiences, ensuring a legacy that lasts to this day. It won a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and numerous Academy Awards before accumulating numerous appearances in popular culture and inspiring adaptations.

And its new stage adaptation, which has been set to paper by the show’s director Ivo van Hove, has a lot going for it as well, particularly with the casting of Gillian Anderson. The X-Files actor has enjoyed a long career on both the stage and the screen and on both sides of the Atlantic. Her London theatre roles have included A Doll’s House at the Donmar Warehouse and her television work on this side of the Pond includes The Fall and Great Expectations. Television audiences will also recognise her from roles in US shows like Hannibal and American Gods.

When the production opens at the Noël Coward Theatre it will also star the performers Monica Dolan, Rhashan Stone and Sheila Reid.

The Noël Coward Theatre is currently the home of The Inheritance, the two-part drama set in New York’s gay community that continues until mid-January 2019.

That leaves the space free for All About Eve to begin performances at the West End venue from Tuesday 12th February 2019 (previews from Saturday 2nd February 2019). It runs there until Saturday 11th May 2019.
