Heathers The Musical - Theatre Royal Haymarket

The Theatre Royal Haymarket already has one musical heading its way before the end of the year as The Band provides a change of pace for a venue that normally schedules high profile plays. But it won’t be the only musical headed to the venue this year as it has been announced that Heathers The Musical, currently entertaining theatregoers at The Other Palace near Buckingham Palace, will be transferring to the West End location this September.

The show, which stars Carrie Hope Fletcher as Veronica Sawyer (the role originally played by Winona Ryder on the big screen), returns audiences to high school. Veronica is a student who meets the bad boy sociopath called J.D. and soon they set their sights on a particular clique of girls.

But what sets Heathers apart from other high school stories is its dark underbelly, with Veronica and J.D. planning some horrifying revenge plans during the course of the show.

Along the way, of course, audiences can also expect some musical numbers penned by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy, including You’re Welcome and Never Shut Up Again, amongst a host of others.

The original Heathers was released in 1988 and starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater as Veronica and J.D. It didn’t exactly light up the box office but it did find an audience, slowly growing in stature over the years and building up a cult following. Its stage adaptation first emerged at the Beginning of this decade, beginning with readings on the west coast of the United States before eventually making way for an off-Broadway production in 2014. It then opened at The Other Palace Theatre in London in June 2018.

And as it now heads to the Theatre Royal Haymarket it forms part of a busy year for the venue, which is currently the home of Tartuffe, Christopher Hampton’s version of the Moliere classic. The West End location also welcomes Broken Wings in August, with The Band set to open there in December.

Before The Band opens, however, Heathers is set to run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Monday 3rd September 2018.
