Lady Windermere's Fan - Vaudeville Theatre

There was already anticipation bubbling for the upcoming Oscar Wilde season, particularly for Lady Windermere’s Fan, which is set to be directed by Kathy Burke. But now a major casting announcement has emerged and it will only to serve to send anticipation through the roof.

Jennifer Saunders, one of the nation’s most beloved comedians, will be making a ‘guest star’ role as the Duchess of Berwick in the show and she will appear alongside Samantha Spiro as Mrs Erlynne and Kevin Bishop as Lord Darlington.

Though the full cast has not yet been announced, these names alone will be enough to entice a sizable crowd to the Vaudeville Theatre when the production opens in January. It is the second show as part of the Oscar Wile season, which also includes A Women Of No Importance, which opens next month and is directed by Dominic Dromgoole.

Lady Windermere’s Fan is set during the titular character’s birthday party, after she has confronted her husband on account of alleged infidelity with a Mrs Erlynne. Windermere then invites Erlynne and complications arise, with many twists and turns during a story that eventually reaches a shocking conclusion. As well as the two Windermeres and Mrs Erlynne, the characters also include Lord Darlington, Lord Augustus Lorton, the Duchess of Berwick, Mr Cecil Graham and Lady Agatha Carlisle, amongst others.

So it has many colourful characters and the casting of some well known performers from the comedy world alongside a director from the same will ensure a lot of attention. Jennifer Saunders, after all, has enjoyed a long career in the spotlight, appearing alongside Dawn French in French And Saunders and leading the hit sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. Her other credits include Minions, Shrek 2 and Muppet Treasure Island and in the West End she lent her writing skills to the jukebox musical Viva Forever.

Lady Windermere’s Fan follows on from A Woman of No Importance when it opens at the Vaudeville Theatre in the New Year. It runs from Friday 12th January 2018 to Saturday 7th April 2018.
