The Show Replacing Dirty Dancing at the Venue in Early 2014

The fact that the show has been running at the Prince Edward Theatre since 2008 might have led audiences to assume it would remain there for the foreseeable future but it has now been announced that Jersey Boys will end its run at the venue early in 2014. After that it has been revealed that the popular West End musical will transfer to the Piccadilly Theatre.

The latter venue is set to be the new home of Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage from July to February 2014. It is not yet clear if the production will find a new West End home once Jersey Boys replaces it.

The jukebox musical chronicles the rise of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The legendary band, from New Jersey, eventually released an array of hit songs that have ensured their ongoing popularity, from Sherry to Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. These songs, plus renditions of Rag Doll, Who Loves You, Walk Like A Man and My Eyes Adored You, are among the musical numbers of the West End show, which also appears on Broadway.

Jersey Boys was last in the news in March when a major cast overhaul too place, seeing David McGranaghan join the cast and Edd Post transfer from the role of Swings to Bob Gaudio. Ryan Molloy remained as Frankie Valli and Jon Boydon continued in the part of Tommy DeVito as well.

Dirty Dancing’s anticipated return to the capital follows its previous run at the Aldwych Theatre, which ended in 2011. The show has also been seen on UK tours and returns to the Piccadilly Theatre from Saturday 13th July 2013 following the current production Viva Forever! It tells the same story as the one found in the movie from the 1980s, which saw Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze fall in love as student and dance teacher respectively, whilst the former is holidaying in New York’s Catskill Mountains.

Jersey Boys remains at the Prince Edward Theatre until March 2014, after which it transfers to the Piccadilly Theatre, replacing Dirty Dancing, which is booking there until Saturday 22nd February 2014.
