The Actress Swaps Gielgud’s Umbrellas of Cherbourg for its Follow-up Production in June

Last month it was revealed that The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg would be closing its doors early at the end of May at the Gielgud Theatre, despite originally booking to October 2011. However, it was soon announced that its replacement would take the form of “Lend Me a Tenor” from the beginning of June, meaning that the West End venue would not be empty for long.

However, it now turns out that audiences arriving at the Gielgud following the closure of “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” will still get to witness one of its stars onstage. This is because Joanna Riding will remain at the venue as she joins the cast of “Lend Me a Tenor”.

Joanna Riding is an acclaimed actress and a familiar face to anyone that has purchased an abundance of Theatre Tickets for west end shows over the years. Her credits span from the West End to the Chichester Festival Theatre, The National Theatre and beyond and her efforts have landed her with two Laurence Olivier Awards in the process. Her credits include Billy Elliot the Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre and “The Witches of Eastwick” at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Her two award wins came from “Carousel” at the National Theatre in 1993 and “My Fair Lady”, also at the National Theatre, in 2003.

“Lend Me a Tenor” is a musical version of the play that originally emerged in the 1980s that went on to earn great success with the awards-world. The musical version then arrived in the last decade and gave new life to an acclaimed story, which follows a tenor called Tito Merelli as he prepares to sing Otello in a 1934 fundraiser. Problems arise when an autograph-seeker inadvertently creates a case of mistaken identity and mistaken infidelity – causing chaos behind the scenes of the show. It was originally written by Ken Ludwig, with the musical adaptation emerging from the pens of Peter Sham and Brad Carroll.

The rest of the cast includes Matthew Kelly, Damian Humbley, Michael Matus and Cassidy Janson performing under the direction of Ian Talbot.

“Lend Me a Tenor” is at the Gielgud Theatre from Wednesday 15th June 2011 (previews from Thursday 2nd June 2011).
