John Simm 'did not expect Hamlet role'

Wednesday, 15th Sep 2010

John Simm has admitted that he thought that he had missed his chance to play the role of Hamlet on the stage.

The actor, who is well known for his role as DI Sam Tyler in the hit time-travel show Life on Mars, told the Daily Telegraph that he did not think he would have the chance to take on one of Shakespeare's most famous characters.

"There comes a time when you look in the mirror and you say to yourself, quite reasonably, that you'll never play the Dane. I had thought 'That's it - it's gone'," the performer explained.

Although he added that he jumped at the chance to do the part at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre, which has in the past seen Joseph Fiennes and Kenneth Branagh tread the boards, Simm stated that he still feels terrified before a performance.

The production is set to open on September 16th 2010 and run to October 23rd, with John Nettles and Dylan Brown also performing in the Paul Miller production.
