The Height of the Storm - Wyndham's Theatre

In recent years we have seen the work of Florian Zeller, as translated by Christopher Hampton (also translating Molière’s Tartuffe this year), regularly appear in the West End.

Well, now we have heard the news that 2018 will bring another, with Zeller’s new play The Height of the Storm gaining its UK premiere as part of a tour that eventually leads to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre.

Jonathan Kent directs from Zeller’s translated script, but the big draw for this production is undoubtedly the presence of both Jonathan Pryce and Dame Eileen Atkins in lead roles, portraying a couple whose status quo is interrupted by an unexpected arrival.

Zeller has made a big impression on audiences in recent years thanks to stagings of The Mother, The Father, The Truth and The Lie in recent years. Both The Father and The Truth were staged at the Duke of York’s and Wyndham’s Theatres respectively, whilst The Lie made its mark at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Such works have made him acclaimed around the world and this will be furthered with The Height Of The Storm, with Pryce and Atkins in turmoil as their fifty-year relationship is rocked by the presence of unexplained flowers and a mysterious woman.

Both Pryce and Atkins will provide familiar faces to West End audiences, with the former best known West End and Broadway productions and films like The Pirates Of The Caribbean series. Atkins, meanwhile, has appeared in everything from Paddington 2 to The Crown, whilst also carving out an impressive stage career on both sides of the Atlantic.

They both make their way to the Wyndham’s Theatre in a busy year for the West End venue, particularly when it comes to familiar names. The venue is currently the home of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night with Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville, with Red, starring Alfred Molina, set to follow it in May.

So the Wyndham’s Theatre remains the homes of iconic performers in 2018 and welcomes Jonathan Pryce and Dame Eileen Atkins in The Height Of The Storm from Tuesday 9th October 2018 (previews from Tuesday 2nd October 2018).
