Katherine Jenkins in Carousel at the Coliseum

Friday, 9th Dec 2016

This week we turn our attentions to the London Coliseum, the home of the English National Opera, as a major musical revival has been announced with some big names amongst the cast.

Chief amongst them is Katherine Jenkins, the mezzo soprano who is best known for singing on stages around the world, who will be taking on the role of Julie Jordan for the Rodgers and Hammerstein revival. She follows in the footsteps of performers like Joanna Riding and Jan Clayton, who appeared in the roles in London and in New York respectively back in the 1940s.

She will have a co-star in Alfie Boe and further cast members to be announced, with additional singers and orchestra also set to make an appearance.

The musical takes audiences across the Atlantic to New England and focuses on the romance between Julie Jordan and Billy Bigelow (Alfie Boe). The misfortunate love story sees them struggle to makes ends meet, with a future child on the horizon. With many songs, like You’ll Never Walk Alone, If I Loved You and The Highest Judge Of All, amongst others, the story continues along to its tragic conclusion.

It is based on the play Liliom by Ferene Molnar and whilst the original was set in Budapest, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical version transports the action to 1870s America. It was previously seen in London when it was staged at the Savoy Theatre in 2008.

Katherine Jenkins is world famous and whilst she is best known for singing classical music (and for appearing on the US version of Strictly Come Dancing entitled Dancing With The Stars), She has previously performed You’ll Never Walk Alone as part of her touring show and has acted in television programmes ranging from Doctor Who to Emmerdale. So it is clear that audiences can expect an entertaining performance from an experienced star when she heads to the Coliseum in 2017.

Carousel is set to return to London with a run at the London Coliseum starting on Friday 7th April 2017 and continuing to Wednesday 31st May 2017.
