3Women - Trafalgar Studio Two

The Trafalgar Studios on Whitehall is often the home of some interesting shows, with the main Studio 1 space currently the home of imaginative musical The Grinning Man and Studio 2 the home of Good Girl (with Rasheeda Speaking following it in April).

The latest news from the venue concerns the latter Studio 2 space, which has been revealed as the upcoming home of 3Women, penned by the well known comedian Katy Brand. Described as an exploration of womanhood in the 21st century, the show stars Anita Dobson, Debbie Chazen, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Oliver Greenall working under the direction of Michael Yale.

The show’s story centres on a particular family and the generations that separate them, exploring three different generations of the family as they find themselves in the same hotel room. Throughout the course of the show the differences in attitudes and expectations from these family members will be laid bare for all to see.

Katy Brand, who is best known for her television work like Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show for ITV and Never Mind The Buzzcocks, commented on her debut play, saying “3Women is a play I have been hoping to write for several years, but now that feminism and women’s rights are at the very forefront of the global conversation, I wanted to really explore those issues from the point of view of three generations of women, and how they interact and intersect within the same family.

“These movements are not so straightforward as the media would sometimes have us believe but wrapped up in the chaotic and all-too-human lived experiences of real women, from the Suffragettes to those who currently campaign for trans-gender rights.  We are all simply trying our best to be ‘modern women’ (whatever that means), making mistakes, and blundering on as best we can!”

The Trafalgar Studios 2’s current show, Good Girl, is Naomi Sheldon’s dark coming-of-age tale set in the 1990s. The production is directed by Matt Peover and continues until Saturday 31st March 2018 before being replaced by Rasheeda Speaking, an American play from Joel Drake Johnson that deals with workplace racism.

3Women is next along, playing at the Trafalgar Studios 2 on Whitehall from Friday 18th May 2018 (previews from Tuesday 15th May 2018) to Saturday 9th June 2018.
