Man of La Mancha - London Coliseum

Big news comes out of the London Coliseum this week as another Hollywood star is confirmed for a West End appearance in 2019. Kelsey Grammer, best known for playing Frasier Crane in both Cheers and Frasier, will be making his way to the venue on St Martin’s Lane for the new production of Man of La Mancha.

It is the latest opportunity for London theatregoers to witness the performer in person following his appearance in Big Fish The Musical at The Other Palace in 2017, however that’s not all: the show will also star the acclaimed soprano Danielle de Niese as well.

But what is Man Of La Mancha? The show is a musical that dates back to the 1960s and puts a unique spin on the story of Don Quixote, with that story’s author, Miguel de Cervantes, a character onstage. Written by Dale Wasserman and with lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh, it sees Cervantes perform the play about Quixote in front of prisoners, adding flourishes to the tale as it comes to life onstage.

Along the way there are also various musical numbers that include the likes of Golden Helmet Of Mambrino, Little Bird Little Bird, I’m Only Thinking Of Him, Aldonza and the iconic Dream The Impossible Dream, amongst others.

Kelsey Grammer is world famous for his portrayal of Frasier Crane in sitcom Cheers and its spinoff series Frasier, though he has also appeared in other television shows like Boss and films like Toy Story 2, Swing Vote and X-Men: The Last Stand. For the stage, theatregoers could recognise him from Big Fish The Musical at The Other Palace, London, The Color Purple at the Bernard B Jacobs Theatre, New York, Finding Neverland at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, New York and La Cage Aux Folles at the Longacre Theatre, also in New York.

Man Of La Mancha is at the London Coliseum from 30th April 2019 (previews from 26th April 2019) to 8th June 2019.
