Laurie Sansom directs Kiss Of The Spider Woman at the Menier Chocolate Factory

Thursday, 15th Feb 2018

Forever a location in which to witness some high profile shows, often transferring to the West End, the Menier Chocolate Factory will be in the spotlight again from March as it welcomes an acclaimed adaptation of Manuel Puig’s popular novel Kiss of the Spider Woman, directed by Laurie Sansom.

The news comes as audiences flock to the venue to witness Barnum, the musical spectacular that celebrates the circus pioneer P. T. Barnum. The production provides a visually arresting look at his life and career and plays whilst the film The Greatest Showman (an unrelated film, but concerning the same subject) plays in cinemas.

Kiss Of The Spider will be a change of pace for the venue, however, As is a lower-key affair, focusing on the conversations between two prison inmates in Buenos Aires. Those prisoners are Valentin Arregui Paz, a revolutionary, and Luis Albert Molina, whose own background is far removed. During the course of the show we witness as their relationship develops and expands, providing a thought-provoking exploration that has won over audiences since it was first adapted to the stage in the 1980s.

Directing duties fall upon Laurie Sansom and he has plenty of experience of bringing some interesting shows to the stage around the country. As Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland he helmed The James Plays and The Driver’s Seat, amongst many others, and has also brought work to the capital and beyond.

But for his latest show he delves into a play that was penned by Allan Baker and José Rivera and was first staged in 1985. Puig was involved in adapting his own novel, with Baker translating it for London audiences when it landed at the Bush Theatre. The rest, as they say, is history.

So this will provide another interesting show for the Menier Chocolate Factory and whilst casting is yet to be revealed, the venue is known for attracting top talent, making it one of the most exciting venues beyond the West End and the National Theatre.

This is reflected in its current show Barnum and will be furthered when Kiss Of The Spider Woman opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory on Wednesday 21st March 2018 (previews from Thursday 8th March 2018). It runs until Saturday 5th May 2018.
