Lifestyle blogger The Belle Narrative reviews Wicked

Monday, 16th Nov 2015

Based on the acclaimed novel by Gregory Maguire that re-imagined the stories and characters created by L Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch Of The West.’

In essence Wicked is the back story to The Wizard of Oz, covering the events that took place in Oz prior to the arrival of Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto (thus before you watch the show it helps if you are familiar with the original story behind The Wizard of Oz). We are even told how the Lion lost his courage, the Tin Man lost his heart, and how the Scarecrow came to be a scarecrow. There are lots of little surprises and twists in the story, perhaps the most surprising being that Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch Of The West is actually quite the lovable underdog! Well who doesn't love an underdog?!

The whole storyline behind Wicked is brilliant – it’s just so cleverly put together…it’s perfection really! What really made the show for me though were the two lead actresses who play the roles of the two witches Glinda and Elphaba. I was blown away by their superb acting and flawless singing. Both have very powerful voices and their solos left me with goose bumps more than once!

With regards to the venue, the Apollo Victoria Theatre with its striking art deco design couldn’t have been a better fit. The green-tinged foyer area further aids in setting the atmosphere, and by the time you are in your seat, you are eager and ready to delve into the mystery and excitement behind the Land of Oz!

This is a show that all ages would enjoy - everything about the show is just fantastic – from the acting, to the singing, to the costumes and set design! The big scary-looking dragon above the stage is quite an impressive sight – especially mid-show when it comes alive! ...Again the plot behind Wicked is excellent and very plausible too - who ever imagined that the two witches of OZ were actually friends?!

There is humour a plenty too so you can bet that you’ll be thoroughly entertained! After watching the show for the first time I can now see why it is so popular. I thoroughly enjoyed Wicked from start to finish and would go and see it again! If you thought you knew the whole story about the Land of Oz, Wicked will leave you thinking otherwise!
