True West - Vaudeville Theatre

It seems like a lifetime ago that True West was first announced for a run at the Vaudeville Theatre (though in reality it was actually June), but news continues to trickle in for a production that is set to open its doors in November.

So as that month creeps closer we now know that Madeleine Potter is amongst those set to star alongside the previously-announced Kit Harrington and Johnny Flynn, as well as Donald Sage Mackay.

Set in the desert near the West Coast of the USA, the story in Sam Shepard’s True West focuses on the characters of Austin (Harrington) and Lee (Flynn), two brothers who re-enter each other’s lives from opposite spectrums. Austin is a Hollywood screenwriter and this work has not gone unnoticed by Lee, particularly as he has been recruited to pen the new film from the well known producer Saul Kimmer, and so he re-enters his world with a proposition that could be the undoing of Austin’s sanity.

As Lee makes his living through thievery, Austin’s world could come crashing down as the story unfolds.

True West has proven to be a popular play, with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama almost bestowed on the production when it was first seen back in the early 1980s. Its return to London is highly anticipated as a result, with the presence of Kit Harrington only adding to this.

The addition of Madeleine Potter is another positive for the production. The American performer has many credits on both sides of the Atlantic, with London productions including Broken Glass at the Tricycle Theatre in 2010, After Mrs Rochester at the Lyric and Duke of York’s Theatres, Southwark Fair at the National Theatre and An Ideal Husband at the Haymarket Theatre. She has also amassed great success over the decades in numerous Broadway productions.

Prior to True West opening, the Vaudeville Theatre is the home to Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest as part of a season of shows from the iconic playwright. It continues at the venue until late October. The Simon & Garfunkel Story briefly follows it in the first half of November.

True West then runs at the Vaudeville Theatre from Friday 23rd November 2018.
