The ABBA Musical Ending its Run at the Prince of Wales Theatre in September 2012

Though the news does not apply for almost a year there has been a big announcement concerning the future of “Mamma Mia!” in the West End, namely it is to transfer to the Novello Theatre in September 2012 after eight years at the Prince of Wales Theatre. The production has been running in the capital since it originally opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999 and is perhaps one of the most successful musicals around at the moment.

“Mamma Mia!” takes audiences to a Greek island where we are introduced to the character of Sophie Sheridan (currently played by Dani De Waal), who is soon set to marry the dishy Sky (Craig Fletcher). But there’s a problem – Sophie has never met her father and she wants nothing more than for him to walk her down the aisle. With the help of a diary owned by her mother, Donna (Sally Ann Triplett), she manages to narrow it down to three people and promptly invites all of them to the island for the wedding, hoping that her heart will tell her who her real father is. But this does not go according to plan and trouble ensues...

The musical follows in the footsteps of various others in the capital by utilising the music of a well known band to provide the soundtrack, with “We Will Rock You” using Queen and “Jersey Boys” using the music of The Four Seasons. In this case it is ABBA that provides the tunes and as a result those that pick up Theatre Tickets and witness “Mamma Mia!” can hear versions of tracks like “S O S”,  “Thank You For The Music”, “Chiquita”, “Dancing Queen”,  “Waterloo” and “Super Trouper” alongside, of course, “Mamma Mia!”

The exact date of the transfer is yet to be confirmed though it is known that the production will remain at the Prince of Wales Theatre until September (it was originally booking to Saturday 20th October 2012). “Crazy For You” is currently running at the Novello Theatre and is booking to Saturday 28th July 2012.
