Mamma Mia! The Party announced for London’s O2

Monday, 1st Oct 2018

Audiences already have Mamma Mia! to enjoy at the Novello Theatre in London’s West End, but a new announcement indicates that ABBA fans will have another way to celebrate the Swedish pop group as Mamma Mia! The Party opens at the O2 next year.

The show features music and lyrics from Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and takes audiences to the island of Skopelos, providing a story on a Greek island, just like the show at the Novello Theatre.

That story is set in restaurant, with the venue itself providing an immersive experience. The main characters are Nikos and Kate, who run the establishment, with romance and comedy in the air as the songs of ABBA are performed. Audience members will dine during the show, with the actors mingling amongst the crowd.

The show has been brought to the UK from its original home in Stockholm, with Sandi Toksvig adapting it for British audiences. The well known comedian and presenter of QI commented on her engagement with the production, saying “This has been a dream job – writing this adaptation mainly because I want to go to it myself and I got to hang out with the legend that is Björn [Ulvaeus]."

Toksvig, in addition to presenting work that includes The Great British Bake Off and BBC Radio 4’s The New Quiz, has also earned praise for writing work that includes the books Valentine Grey and Melted Into Air, plus plays like Silver Lining, which toured the UK in 2017, and Bully Boy, which ran at the St James Theatre in 2012.

For Mamma Mia! The Party, a large team is working to adapt a special venue within the O2 to make all of the plans come to fruition. Roine Söderlundh directs from Toksvig’s script, whilst casting is yet to be announced.

Mamma Mia! The Party opens at the O2 on Thursday 19th September 2019 (previews from Thursday 29th August 2019). Meanwhile, the West End’s Mamma Mia! continues at the Novello Theatre, where it is currently booking to Saturday 14th September 2019.
