Chicago - Phoenix Theatre

The current production of Chicago running at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End already has plenty of theatregoers rushing to get tickets thanks to the presence of Hollywood actor Cuba Gooding Jr. He plays the role of sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn until Saturday 30th June 2018 and there’s no doubt audiences will be hoping to see him before he steps down.

But that is not to say there won’t be a familiar face in the iconic role after Gooding Jr. heads back to the States. From Monday 2nd July it has now been revealed that Martin Kemp, best known as a member of Spandau Ballet and for acting in The Krays and EastEnders, will be play the part as he heads to the Phoenix Theatre.

Chicago is the story that takes audiences to the city of the same name in the 1920s and deals with the contemporary subject of the criminal celebrity. Based on the 1920s play from Maurine Dallas Watkins it follows Roxie Hart as she is sent to prison and meets Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian performer with her own dark past. But whilst they have received plenty of attention for their crimes, they want to find stardom for the right reasons and so they recruit lawyer Billy Flynn so that they can make their bids for freedom.

Martin Kemp, in addition to his mentioned work in the film The Krays, TV series EastEnders and 1980s new wave band Spandau Ballet, has also appeared in a wealth of other television shows and stage productions. His credits include Father Brown, Birds Of A Feather and Waterloo Road, in addition to stage show Million Dollar Quartet on a UK tour.

This is the latest in a long line of his productions of Chicago in the West End, which returns in its current form earlier this year. Dating back to the 1970s, it has been seen all over the globe and is arguably one of the world’s best known musicals.

It continues at the Phoenix Theatre where it is currently booking to Saturday 6th October 2018. Martin Kemp takes over as Billy Flynn for performances from Monday 2nd July 2018.
