The Royal Shakespeare Company Musical Wins Seven Awards at the Royal Opera House

Back when the nominations were announced in March much of the attention surrounding the Laurence Olivier Awards centred on the show with the most nominations - “Matilda the Musical” – and now that the results have come in, this has not changed. The show managed to land a total of seven awards at Sunday’s ceremony at the Royal Opera House, including Best New Musical.

The production also landed awards for Best Director (for Matthew Warchus), Best Actor in a Musical (Bertie Carvel), Best Actress in a Musical (the four young actresses portraying Matilda), Best Theatre Choreographer (Peter Darling), Best Set Design (Rob Howell) and Best Sound Design (Simon Baker).

Other musicals managed to pick up awards on the night as well, including “Crazy for You” at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park, which landed awards for Best Costume Design (Peter McKintosh) and Best Musical Revival. The show later transferred to the Novello Theatre until the end of March. Meanwhile Sheridan Smith, who earned the Best Actress in a Musical last year for “Legally Blonde the Musical”, managed to land another award this year, albeit in a completely different category: Best Performance in a Supporting Role (“Flare Path”).

“Matilda the Musical” is a production of the Royal Shakespeare Company and originally ran at their Courtyard Theatre from 2010 to 2011 before beginning a run at the West End’s Cambridge Theatre from November 2011. It remains there now and those with theatre tickets can witness a show in which the eponymous Matilda uses her skills of intellect to teach wrongdoers lessons. Eventually she learns that she has telekinetic powers and she uses these skills to further her cause.

Whilst Matthew Warchus directs, the show is also notable for featuring the music of comedian Tim Minchin.

Other winners on the night included Derren Brown, whose show “Svengali” picked up the Best Entertainment accolade, whilst “Collaborators” picked up the award for Best New Play.

“Matilda the Musical” is at the Cambridge Theatre and is currently booking until 21st October 2012.
