The X-Factor Winner Set to Join the Popular Musical in London’s West End from July 2015

Memphis The Musical is one of the more recent success stories in the West End, with Beverley Knight leading a cast that has taken the show to great heights since it opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre. Now news has emerged which will ensure this success continues as not only does Knight extend her stay in the show to later this year, a brand new DJ Huey Calhoun is also joining the cast.

X-Factor contestant Matt Cardle, best known for his win on the ITV talent series and as the man behind various albums and singles, is set to play the role from July as Killian Donelly steps down.

In Memphis The Musical, DJ Huey Calhoun is the 50s radio DJ based on the real life Dewey Phillips. He is the man who changes the world of Felicia, who has been working in the clubs of Tennessee, but whose music has not reached the audiences it deserves. Huey causes great controversy by showing off African American music to the masses and Memphis might not be ready for this, but one thing is for certain – there’s a romance blossoming.

The story is amplified by various musical numbers that range from Everybody Wants To Be Black On A Saturday Night to Steal Your Rock ‘n’ Roll, plus many others.
Matt Cardle will take on the role of Calhoun for 3 months beginning on 5th July 2015 and it will be the latest opportunity to see him on the stage. He will be known to those with theatre tickets not only for X-Factor but for albums like Porcelain, The Fire and Letters, plus an array of singles that continue to cement his time in the spotlight (something that will undoubtedly be amplified further with this stage role).

And of course his appearance continues a tradition of casting well known chart-toppers in the lead roles as Beverley Knight continues as Felicia until October.

Memphis The Musical is running at the Shaftesbury Theatre where it is booking to Saturday 31st October 2015.
