Matt Cardle joins Strictly Ballroom The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre

Strictly Ballroom - Piccadilly Theatre

It’s been a while since we talked about Strictly Ballroom The Musical, currently running at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End. The production opened at the Theatreland location in April, with audiences delighting in a musical that is better known as the career-launching film from Baz Luhrmann.

Will Young currently plays the role of Wally Strand but it has been announced that he will be replaced by Matt Cardle at the end of the month, with the X-Factor winner taking on the part from Tuesday 31st July 2018. It means that one talent show winner will replace another, with Will Young catapulted to fame by Pop Idol in 2002.

Strictly Ballroom tells the story of Scott, a ballroom dancer from Australia whose attitudes and styles put him at odds with those around him. He teams up with Fran to win a huge competition, leading to tension and conflict as he seeks success and love.

The show began life as a stage play in the 1980s, but it was the film version released in 1992 that really made a mark, catapulting the career of Luhrmann (who went on to direct the films Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby, amongst others) and providing audiences with a memorable time.

So it is only right that producers cast talented and familiar names in the lead roles. Cardle, whilst best known for The X-Factor, has also found fans with songs like When We Collide and Run For Your Life alongside albums like Letters, The Fire, Porcelain and Time To Be Alive. He also appeared in Memphis The Musical at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

He spoke about his engagement with Strictly Ballroom, saying “I’m so excited to be returning to the West End and to be joining the cast of Strictly Ballroom to play the part of Wally Strand. It’s so rare that a role comes around that you can put so much of your own stamp on.

“I have seen the show and it’s absolutely incredible. Baz Luhrmann is an utter genius, As is Drew McOnie. To have the opportunity to sing all these huge songs every night is a real honour.”

Strictly Ballroom continues at the Piccadilly Theatre and is booking for performances up to Saturday 20th October 2018.
