Meera Syal is the new Miss Hannigan in Annie

Since Annie opened at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End, the main talking points have regularly been the performer portraying the iconic role of Miss Hannigan, with Miranda Hart initially inhabiting the character when it opened in June.

Since then Craig Revel Horwood has replaced her in the part and now we know the identity of the actor replacing him next month.

Meera Syal, best known for shows like Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars At No.42, will step into their shoes at the end of November. She is the latest comic performer to appear in the show after Hart and ensures a well-known name is associated with the production as it heads into the Christmas season.

Syal is also the latest comedic actor to appear in the West End this year, with Matt Berry amongst those to appear in The Philanthropist at the Trafalgar Studios earlier in 2017 and Ross Noble currently playing Igor in Young Frankenstein at the Garrick Theatre.

Annie is set in New York in the 1930s and it is here that we meet the world’s most famous orphan, who lives at the orphanage run by the mentioned, villainous Miss Hannigan. Annie wants to find her family but instead finds Oliver Warbucks, a billionaire willing to take her out of the orphanage and provide her with a Christmas to remember. The future looks bright for Annie, as long as Miss Hannigan doesn’t ruin it.

With all of these comedians appearing in the capital, Syal is certainly in good company and appears in the show having previously worked for the stage. She co-wrote the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Bombay Dreams and has also appeared in shows at the Royal Court, the Menier Chocolate Factory and the Trafalgar Studios, amongst others.
She appears alongside Alex Bourne as Warbucks and the trio of Ruby Stokes, Lola Moxom and Madeleine Haynes alternating in the title role.

Annie is one of many big musical revivals to appear in London recently and like Evita and Cats, which have also been revived in recent years, it has found a large and eager audience.

Meera Syal takes on the role of Miss Hannigan in Annie at the Piccadilly Theatre from Monday 27th November 2017.
