Chess - London Coliseum

Towards the end of 2017 we first got word that a major revival of Chess is set to land in the West End in 2018. Playing at the London Coliseum, which has presented a range of popular musicals in recent years, the production will ensure the latest generation of theatregoers gets to witness the classic musical from Tim Rice and ABBA’s Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus.

Now, with previews set to begin in just over two months, we have gotten word on some of the names cast in the production, with Michael Ball amongst them.

The legendary musical theatre performer will appear alongside X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke, stage regular Cassidy Jones, Mike + The Mechanics’ Tim Howar and previous Chess star Murray Head.

One of the most celebrated musicals of all time, Chess emerged in the 1980s when the Cold War was still weighing down on people worldwide. It was a time in which America and the Soviet Union were constantly competing and this was perfectly encapsulated by the chess tournament portrayed in Chess, in which two titans go head to head, with their governments watching and the whole world looking on as bystanders with bated breath.

The news that Michael Ball will be appearing in the show is certain to stir up plenty of interest in the production (as if there wasn’t enough already). As one of the biggest names in musical theatre he has made his way to the stage in countless productions across many decades, meaning that he has appeared in some of the biggest shows of all time. With co-stars like Alexandra Burke, Cassidy Jones, Tim Howar and Murray Head he will undoubtedly bring new life to an iconic show.

It all happens as the London Coliseum continues to welcome major stage musicals alongside its usual output of opera and dance. Recent years have seen it present productions of Carousel and Bat Out Of Hell – The Musical (returning to the Dominion Theatre this year).

Chess runs at the London Coliseum from Tuesday 1st May 2018 (previews from Thursday 26th April 2018) to Saturday 2nd June 2018.
