The Musical Celebrates its Quarter-Century Birthday in the West End

Miss Saigon will become the latest show in the West End to celebrate its 25th birthday as it announces a special gala show at its current home of the Prince Edward Theatre. The production was revived at the venue in May and celebrates its anniversary in September.

Recent years have seen both Les Misérables and The Phantom Of The Opera celebrate their quarter-century birthdays, both with high profile performances at the O2 and Royal Albert Hall respectively. The latter’s special performance was also directed by Laurence Connor, the ongoing director of this production of Miss Saigon.

Unlike those two shows, however, Miss Saigon has not been seen continuously in the West End since it originally opened in 1989, but that doesn’t mean that producers want this milestone to go by.  Therefore audiences will be able to pick up theatre tickets at 1989 prices for gala performance, featuring cast members from the original run, on 22nd September 2014.

Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr. that takes its cues from Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. It follows a romantic meeting between an American GI and a young Vietnamese club worker during the Vietnam war. The American GI is named John and he initially pays for the services of the Vietnamese Kim, but soon, whilst she continues to work at a sleazy club under ‘The Engineer’, a romance blossoms
The show also features some well known musical numbers and these include I Still Believe Him, This Is The Hour, The Movie In My Mind, The Morning Of The Dragon, Let Me See His Western Nose and Fall Of Saigon, among others.

The show was first seen at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane back in September 1989 and became a huge hit, leading to Broadway version that began performances in 1991. Both earned many awards and attracted many admirers, eventually leading to the current version of the show replacing Jersey Boys at the venue back in May.

The Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary Gala will take place on Monday 22nd September. The show is currently booking at the Prince Edward Theatre until Saturday 25th April 2015.
