Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour - Duke of York's Theatre

Perhaps one of the highest profile closures of recent years was Billy Elliot The Musical, the popular stage adaptation of the hit film, which closed its doors at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 2016. Penned by the film’s screenwriter Lee Hall, the musical had many fans and had been a staple of the West End since 2005.

Those hoping to witness the work of Lee Hall, however, are in luck as another of his stage adaptations, Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, is due to open at the Duke of York’s Theatre in May 2017. Unlike Billy Elliot, Hall didn’t adapt the script from his own work, but from Alan Warner’s 1998 novel The Sopranos, but it will still be an opportunity to witness his stand-out writing.

The show transfers to the West End following previous appearances north of the border, premiering at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh in 2015, and will be produced by the well known Sonia Friedman. It will be the second time it has been seen in the capital as it was previously staged at the National Theatre last year.

Set across 24 hours, Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour focuses on six girls as they go through a memorable and life changing day, going through all of the emotions that life can through in quick succession. A coming of age tale with love and lust thrown in for good measure, it is easy to see why Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour has made a profound impression on audiences.

The musical also features an array of songs, recognisable hits from across genres, and this makes for a unique occasion at a West End theatre.

Hall, writing, is not just known for Billy Elliot The Musical, however, so there will be plenty to enjoy even if that show was never on your radar. The acclaimed playwright has also presented plays like Shakespeare In Love, The Pitmen Painters and Cooking With Elvis alongside films such as War Horse and Toast.

Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour runs at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Monday 15th May 2017 (previews from Tuesday 9th May 2017) to Saturday 2nd September 2017.
