Waiting for Godot - Arts Theatre

For the past few years a touring production of Waiting for Godot has been doing the rounds worldwide, with Patrick O’Donnell and Nick Devlin as Gogo an Didi and now it has been confirmed that the show will be making its West End appearance this September.

It’s the latest in a long line of West End productions for Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece. Over the years some huge names have inhabited the lead roles, with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen the most famous in recent times alongside past team-ups like Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson.

This time, however, the task is beholden to two actors who have plenty of experience on the stage, with O’Donnell and Devlin also appearing alongside Conor Donelan and Paul Kealyn. They work under the direction of Peter Reid.

Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot was penned back in the late 1940s and performed in London in the middle of the 1950s after it was translated into English. Since then it has gone on to becomes one of the Irish playwright’s best known works, demonstrated not only in the top quality of performers who have inhabited its lead roles, but also the myriad productions that are regularly staged around the world.

Its story focuses on the mentioned Gogo and Didi as they bide their time waiting for the titular Godot to arrive, whom they hope will solve all of their problems. During the wait they also meet characters like Pozzo and his slave Lucky as they pass the time arguing and discussing.

Beckett’s play was one of his early stage shows, released in France as En Attendant Godot. During his career he also released a range of other shows, from Krapp’s Last Tape and Happy Days to Come And Go and Neither, amongst others. Known for black comedy and minimalism, he was one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.

Waiting For Godot returns to the West End with a brief run at the Arts Theatre from Tuesday 5th September 2017 to Saturday 23rd September 2017.
