Patrick Stewart 'to make Shakespeare return'

Friday, 17th Dec 2010

Sir Patrick Stewart may be set to return to the stage in a new production of The Merchant of Venice.

The actor, who is well-known for his appearances in the Star Trek TV series and the X-Men films, is to take on the role of Shylock in the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) production, Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail reported.

Stewart is to be reunited with director Rupert Goold for the adaptation, after working with him previously on a production of another of Shakespeare's great plays, Macbeth.

The production is set to be only the second one performed on the RSC's newly renovated Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

According to Bamigboye, rehearsals are set to begin in late March, with the opening night pencilled in for May 13th 2011.

An entirely different audience to those who enjoy Shakespeare plays may be heading to the theatre at present, as it is currently playing host to a version of Roald Dahl's book Matilda.
