Tartuffe - Theatre Royal Haymarket

In January we first got word that Moliére’s iconic Tartuffe would be headed to the West End, with Christopher Hampton providing the script for director Gerald Garutti.

Now, however, we get the first word on those set to portray the lead characters, including Paul Anderson in the title role and Audrey Fleurot as Elmire.

This re-imagined version of the Tartuffe plot updates the original 1664 play and brings it to modern day Hollywood, with Orgon a French filmmaker in Tinseltown, allowing the production to contain both English and French. Like the original, the story still involves Tartuffe casting a spell of great charm over Orgon and his wife Elmire, but with Tartuffe an evangelical in Hollywood and his seductive voice allowing him to take everything from Orgon and his family.

With iconic characters like these it is no wonder director Garutti has called upon some experienced players. Paul Anderson, for example, will be bringing a lot of stage and screen experience to the role of Tartuffe, having previously appeared in films like The Revenant, Brimstone and Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows. Likewise, Audrey Fleurot is a an experienced French performer who has appeared in multiple films such as The Intouchables.

When the show was first announced, writer Christopher Hampton commented on the radical interpretation of Moliére, saying “Statistically, Tartuffe is the most-performed French play ever. I’ve seen it in theatres ranging from the RSC to the National Theatre of Vietnam, and it never fails to seem relevant and connect with audiences, in addition, of course, to amusing them.

“So when Gérald Garutti and Oliver King suggested a bilingual version with an English-speaking Tartuffe, it seemed a fascinating way to approach this perennial classic and situate it in today’s bewildering world.”
The Theatre Royal Haymarket is currently the home of Frozen, starring Suranne Jones, with Life & Fate then making a brief appearance in May.

Tartuffe is then set to play at the West End venue from Tuesday 29th May 2018 (with previews from Friday 25th May 2018) to Saturday 28th July 2018.
