Pearl Mackie Added to The Birthday Party Cast at the Harold Pinter Theatre

Monday, 18th Sep 2017

It was only recently that we heard the first word of the new production of Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party heading to the West End with top names like Toby Jones, Zoë Wanamaker and Stephen Mangan in lead roles.

But now we already have word of another big name joining the cast members and she is one of 2017’s more familiar television faces – Pearl Mackie. Her familiarity, of course, is due to her starring role in the most recent series of Doctor Who in which she starred as companion Bill Potts alongside Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor.

So a show that was already turning heads following its previous announcement will now have an extra asset in which to attract audiences.

The play was first seen back in the 1950s and as such this production appears 60 years since its premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith. It is also the first time it has been seen in the West End since Pinter himself died in 2008, making this extra poignant, and as such it is only fitting that it runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

And the assembled cat only adds to the anticipation. Toby Jones, Zoë Wanamaker and Stephen Mangan are all instantly recognisable performers whose work has brought them in front of audiences on numerous occasions. And now, with Pearl Mackie added, the size of the potential audience has only increased.

The story in The Birthday Party takes audiences to a boarding house near the sea that is run by Meg Boles (Wanamaker) and Petey Boles. It is a quiet world, with nothing much happening, and the only resident is Stanley (Jones), whose birthday prompts the eponymous party. But the arrival of strangers to the birthday party turns matters upside down and upsets the status quo of their longstanding existence.

The Birthday Party is the first show to appear at the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2018 (2017’s Oslo ceases performances this December). It runs at the West End venue from Thursday 18th January 2018 (with previews beginning on Tuesday 9th January 2018).
