The Chichester Festival Theatre Production Transferring to the West End from January 2015

Audiences headed to the Chichester Festival Theatre before 1st November 2014 have the chance to pick up theatre tickets and catch Taken At Midnight from writer Mark Hayhurst. However, anyone that misses out on the production will have more chances to catch this well-received play as it heads to a new home early next year. The show is transferring to the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket in January and it will do so with its star Penelope Wilton remaining as the character of Irmgard.

Irmgard is the mother of Hans Litten in Taken At Midnight, the latter being the German lawyer who represented the opponents of Hitler and resultantly placed him on the stand in court prior to the Second World War. The show looks at Irmgard’s attempts to fight for his release after the Jewish lawyer is imprisoned by the Nazis, a process that puts her at great risk as well.
The play opened at the Minerva Theatre, as part of the Chichester Festival Theatre, in August and has received positive reviews from critics. It is directed by Jonathan Church.

Penelope Wilton is perhaps best known to audiences for two television roles that have made her a familiar face in the last decade. One is Harriet Jones in the series Doctor Who, a character that appeared on various occasions during the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant years, and the other is Isobel Crawley in Downton Abbey. However, her career has also included a vast amount of stage credits that include A Delicate Balance at the Almeida Theatre, Hamlet at the Wyndham’s Theatre and The Family Reunion at the Donmar Warehouse, among others.

Her co-star is Martin Hutson, who plays her son Hans Litten, and he has previously appeared in Antony And Cleopatra at the Chichester Festival Theatre, Another Country at the Arts Theatre and The Mandate at the National Theatre, to name but a few.

Currently the home of Great Britain, which itself transferred to the venue from the Lyttelton National Theatre, Taken At Midnight appears on the stage of the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Monday 26th January 2015 (previews from Thursday 15th January 2015) to Saturday 14th March 2015.
