Doctor Who Actor Joins the Cast Whilst Lara Pulver Reprises her Role from the Chichester Festival Theatre

Late last year it was revealed that the musical Gypsy would be transferring to the West End with Imelda Staunton in the iconic role of Rose. It will be the latest in a long line of west end shows to have their origins on the stage of the Chichester Festival Theatre, with many productions making the transition from that venue, and will also mark the latest occasion in which audiences can catch the likes of Staunton live on stage.

Now more names have been announced with former Doctor Who star Peter Davison joining the cast as Herbie and Lara Pulver reprising her role as Gypsy Rose Louise from Chichester. They will all be performing under the direction of Jonathan Kent when the show replaces Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the Savoy Theatre from March.

Gypsy is a Stephen Sondheim musical. The famous lyricist worked on the show alongside composer Jule Styne and writer Arthur Laurents in the 1950s and it was previously staged in the capital back in the early 1970s with Angela Lansbury in a lead role.

It tells the story of Rose and her daughters June and Louise (all based on the real life Rose Havock, June Havock and Gypsy Rose Lee) as the former attempts to turn her offspring into stars of the American music hall scene. When June decides she no longer wishes to be involved Louise must fill her shoes, but she might not be as skilled as her sister. Set in a time of great change for the industry it is a time of great hardship.

Peter Davison portrayed the Fifth Doctor in the long running show Doctor Who back in the early 1980s (taking over from Tom Baker) and has also appeared in numerous other shows and stage productions. He returned to Doctor Who in 2007 for a Children In Need special, appeared in (and directed) The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot as part of 2013’s Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations and also appears in the series Law & Order: UK.

For the stage his credits include Legally Blonde The Musical at the Savoy Theatre, Spamalot at the Palace Theatre, Under The Doctor at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter Theatre) and Chicago at the Adelphi Theatre, among others, meaning that he is a familiar face for West End audiences.

Gypsy is at the Savoy Theatre from Wednesday 15th April 2015 (with previews beginning on Saturday 28th March 2015).
