American Actor Joins Tom Conti at the Menier Chocolate Factory

It was recently revealed that Tom Conti would be the latest actor to appear on the stage of the Menier Chocolate Factory in a production of Jack Rosenthal’s Smash. Now another name has been added to the list, this time an American actor who has appeared in various movies and television shows – Richard Schiff. The performer, best known for his appearances in “The West Wing”, will replace the previous announced Kerry Shale in a role when the show opens at the London Bridge venue in March 2011.

Richard Schiff has taken on many different roles over the years and this has included appearances in the likes of “Underneath the Lintel” at the Duchess Theatre, which was also broadcast by Radio 4 in 2008, plus television shows like “The West Wing”. His other credits include shows such as “ER”, “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and “Entourage”, whilst his movie credits include “The Lost World: Jurassic Park”, “Dr Dolittle” and “City Hall”. He appears in “Smash!” having recently appeared in “The Infidel” and “Made in Dagenham”, in addition to the upcoming “Johnny English Reborn”.

So London theatre audiences will get a chance to see a previous star of the West End in “Smash!”, which is a fictionalised account of attempting to adapt a play into a musical. It is inspired by Jack Rosenthal’s own attempt at adapting his own play “The Bar Mitzvah Boy” for the musical theatre scene, with many difficulties along the way. There’s the arrogant director, the troublesome writer and plenty of other individuals wanting to get their grubby paws on the piece. It was written in 1981.

But Rosenthal’s career also included various television shows and successful plays, though he is best known for his work on shows such as “Coronation Street” and “London’s Burning”, he latter of which he created.

And with Schiff appearing in “Smash!” it makes two stage and screen stars in the production, though it won’t be the only London show to feature familiar faces in 2011, with the likes of “In a Forest, Dark and Deep” featuring Matthew Fox in the West End.

Smash! appears at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Thursday 31st March 2011 (previews from Thursday 24th March 2011) until Sunday 8th May 2011.
