Reviews Roundup and News of a Special Gala Performance for Children in Need

Some updates have emerged for the capital’s newest musical – “Rock Of Ages” – which opened its doors last week at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

First of all there has been an abundance of reviews for the production following its opening night in the capital on Wednesday 28th September 2011, following almost a month of previews from Wednesday 31st August.

Second of all, news has today emerged of a special gala production of the show to take place in November, which will raise money for Children In Need under the banner “BBC London 94.9fm Rocks for Children In Need”.

The reviews have come from various news sources since the opening night last week, with Pierre Perron in the Independent calling it “hard to fault” and notes that the production is better, in his opinion, than “We Will Rock You”. Meanwhile, Alun Palmer in The Mirror says “Rock of Ages is a hugely enjoyable evening celebrating a time and music we should really leave behind, but can't”.

Other reviews have been less favourable, with some reacting negatively to the show’s self deprecating style and its breaking of the fourth wall (in the case of Broadway World they compare it unfavourably to “Monty Python’s Spamalot”).

Moving on to the special gala production, it has been announced that proceeds from Theatre Tickets sold for the performance of Wednesday 16th November will go to Children In Need. Meanwhile, the production will also feature presenters from BBC London such as Vanessa Feltz, Gaby Roslin and Tony Blackburn on hand to lead the proceedings. The evening will follow in the footsteps of last year’s gala production of “Jersey Boys”, which raised tens of thousands for the annual charity event.

“Rock of Ages” tells the story of a small town girl named Sherrie who is drawn to LA rocker Drew and together they bond over their love for 1980s glam rock, before embarking on an exciting romance together. Songs including “The Final Countdown”, “I Wanna Rock” and “We Built This City” appear during the course of the show.

“Rock of Ages” is at the Shaftesbury Theatre and is currently booking to Saturday 11th February 2012. “BBC London 94.9fm Rocks for Children In Need” takes place on Wednesday 16th November 2011.
