Ruthie Henshall - Chicago the Musical

The beginning of this year brought the news that Cuba Gooding Jr. would be making his way to a West End stage in 2018 to star in the latest revival of Chicago.

This is still the case, with the March start-date edging ever closer, but now we have word on the names of those set to accompany him on the stage of the Phoenix Theatre, with Ruthie Henshall and Sarah Soetaert set to join him in the leads.

With Gooding Jr. playing Billy Flynn in the production we now have word that Soetaert will be playing Roxie Hart, with Josefina Gabrielle as Velma Kelly. Meanwhile, performing legend Henshall will take on the role of Mama Morton.

Chicago is the iconic musical that focuses on the characters of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, both of whom are locked away behind bars and wish to make their bids for freedom. Set during the era of the ‘celebrity criminal’ they have found themselves in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, but wish to make their names on the stage, so enlist the help of sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn to set them free.

The famous musical has been a regular part of the musical theatre repertoire since it was first staged in the 1970s, with the play on which it was based emerging in the 1920s, and as a result it has welcomed some big names for the lead roles.

Henshall’s status goes without saying, with a range of credits going back three decades. Meanwhile, Sarah Soetaert returns to the role of Roxie Hart having played the role when Chicago previously appeared at the Garrick Theatre and Cambridge Theatre (in addition to playing other roles when the show ran at the Adelphi Theatre) so she is no stranger to the production.

Chicago plays at the Phoenix Theatre following the current production, The Exorcist, which has been playing there since October 2018. The major West End musical revival runs at the historic location from Monday 26th March 2018 to Saturday 23rd June 2018.
