Sheena Easton - 42nd Street - Theatre Royal Drury Lane

It seems that barely a week goes by in which we don’t hear about a major world star making their way to the West End, whether it’s David Tennant in Don Juan In Soho or Ed Harris in Buried Child.

But this week is not going to be any different as a new press release reveals that Sheena Easton, best known for the song Me Gustas Tal Como Eres with Luis Miguel, will be taking on a role in the new production of 42nd Street, set to open at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in March.

42nd Street is, of course, the hit musical that was first seen on Broadway in 1980 and earned a Laurence Olivier Award when it was first seen in the West End in 1984. So to say this is an acclaimed musical would be an understatement and it now comes to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane hoping for similar success to the 2001 Tony Award-winning Broadway revival.

It tells the story of Peggy Sawyer (Clare Halse) as she experiences the journey that will shape her life. Originally hailing from the countryside she has now swapped her homestead for the neon lights of New York City – more specifically Broadway. For many it is a slow climb to the top but Peggy is handed the gig of a lifetime whilst working in A Chorus Line for a top show. The lead star has pulled out of the production due to injury and it might be up to her to rise to the challenge and take her place. Tom Lister plays Julian Marsh in the production.

But it’s the musical numbers that really make the show and the presence of Easton will only make such numbers stand out even more. They include hits like We’re In The Money and I Only Have Eyes For You, amongst others.

It’s hard to know where to start when describing the career of someone as accomplished as Sheena Easton. After all her career has included many hits, from James Bond song For Your Eyes Only to Grammy Award-nominated Strut, and her popularity has been maintained to this day.

She appears in 42nd Street at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from Tuesday 4th April 2017 (with previews from Monday 20th March 2017).
