Girl From the North Country - Noel Coward Theatre

We’re getting ever closer to the opening of Girl From the North Country in London’s West End. The Conor McPherson musical, which previously appeared at the Old Vic over the summer, heads to the Noël Coward Theatre before the year is out and as a result we are finally hearing some updates.

So we now know that film actor Shirley Henderson will be appearing in the production as she takes on the role of Elizabeth, a part she previously inhabited at the Old Vic Theatre. Her co-stars will include Sheila Atim, Hannah Azuonye, Mary Doherty, Bronagh Gallagher, David Ganly, Ciaran Hinds, Adam James, Claudia Jolly, Karl Johnson, Arinzé Kene, Emmanuel Kojo, Debbie Kurup, Tim McMullan, Sam Reid and Jack Shalloo.

Girl From The North Country has received a lot of attention as it features the music of Bob Dylan during the course of its runtime, giving it a unique edge as audiences are transported to Minnesota in the 1930s. The show is specifically set in the town of Duluth, near Lake Superior, and it is here that we follow various lonely characters who find themselves in the location during the Great Depression.

Performer Shirley Henderson, as mentioned, starred as Elizabeth during the Old Vic run of performances but she has also appeared in a wealth of other production in the capital over many decades, including Anna Weiss at the Whitehall Theatre (now the Trafalgar Studios), Shining Souls at the Old Vic and more. However she is better known for her film roles, which include the Bridget Jones and Harry Potter films alongside Anna Karenina.

So she will be providing one of the familiar faces for audiences headed to the see the productions at the Noël Coward Theatre. The West End venue is currently the home of Labour of Love, James Graham’s play that focuses on a Labour MP and his constituency agent played by Martin Freeman and Tamsin Greig respectively.

That production finishes its run in December, with Girl From The North Country then opening on Thursday 11th January 2018 (previews from Friday 29th December 2017).
