A Christmas Carol with Simon Callow - Arts Theatre

Over the years there have been many different incarnations of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, with an array of familiar names inhabiting the iconic roles.

However, one of the most talked-about in recent times has been the one-man show featuring the acclaimed actor Simon Callow, which has appeared at the Arts Theatre in 2011, 2012 and 2016, and this is set to return for another anticipated run in the West End for the Christmas 2018 season.

It is that part of summer in which many are in denial with the colder months ahead as September gives way to October and the Christmas season beyond, so theatergoers might be forgiven for not thinking about the festive offerings in the West End. But the news of Simon Callow’s return to the capital for A Christmas Carol should stir up plenty of interest.

A Christmas Carol is, of course, Dickens’ classic about the old grump Ebenezer Scrooge, who treats his employees poorly, complains a lot and utters the immortal line ‘Bah humbug!’ at the very mention of Christmas. But when he is visited by various ghosts on the night before the big day, he finds himself facing the holiday with a new sense of cheer.

Callow has proven to be a perfect Scrooge, though few would have doubted this considering his previous credits on the stage and screen. From Four Weddings And A Funeral to Doctor Who and from The Mystery Of Charles Dickens at the Playhouse Theatre to Being Shakespeare at the Trafalgar Studios, he has had a regular place in the hearts of audiences.

With A Christmas Carol he, along with director Tom Cairns, has once again tapped into something to which audiences have responded with glee.

The new press release indicates that this will be the final time that Callow steps into the role at the Arts Theatre, however, so this will be a must-see show this Christmas.

A Christmas Carol runs at the Arts Theatre from Saturday 8th December 2018 to Saturday 12th January 2019.
