The Spice Girls Musical Could Have Found a Home in the West End, According to New Reports

Plans for a Spice Girls musical have been in the headlines for many years now, with Jennifer Saunders tasked with penning the book and a title of “Viva Forever” announced a few years back. Now Baz Bamigboye in the Daily Mail has new details regarding the upcoming production, including the long-awaited news of the musical’s home.

According to the tabloid columnist “Viva Forever” will appear at the Piccadilly Theatre in December, with the venue’s current show Ghost The Musical closing in the preceding autumn.

The last time that details of the plot were discussed it was indicated that the story was going to be an original one rather than a biographical one like “Jersey Boys” (which looks at the rise of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons). This is unsurprising as it is being produced by Judy Craymer of “Mamma Mia!” fame, so audiences can expect a plot revolving around a television talent show (like “The X Factor”) with themes of love and friendship in the mix. According to Bamigboye, Mel C and Emma Bunton were moved to tears when they saw footage from the workshops.

Of course, many of the Spice Girls’ hit songs will also be sprinkled throughout the show, giving audiences the chance to hear the likes of “Wannabe”, “2 Become 1”, “Spice up your Life”, “Goodbye” and, of course, “Viva Forever” (though the exact songs – said to be as many as 16 - are yet to be confirmed).

The Spice Girls remain popular to this day, despite their heyday being more than a decade ago, and this is thanks to their enormous popularity as the instigators of ‘Girl Power’. They released numerous hit songs and became iconic for the distinctive personalities within the group, with Emma Bunton known as Baby Spice, Mel C as Sport Spice, Mel B as Scare Spice, Victoria Beckham as Posh Spice and Geri Halliwell as Ginger Spice.

The exact end-date for “Ghost the Musical” has not been announced. What is known is that “Viva Forever” will appear at the Piccadilly Theatre from December.
