An American in Paris - Dominion Theatre

This week we can report on updates to two of the capital’s top shows, with An American in Paris sadly announcing its closing date in January 2018, whilst Stomp celebrates its 15th Birthday in the West End.

Both are musical productions with many fans, but whilst An American In Paris opened at the Dominion Theatre in March this year, the current run of Stomp has been ongoing since September 2002 (with previous performances in the 1990s).

An American In Paris is based on the popular film of the same name, which itself featured an array of musical numbers like I Got Rhythm and I’ll Build A Stairway To Paradise, alongside a story that focuses on the character of Jerry Mulligan. He is a veteran of the recent Second World War, which has left him with some horrifying memories, and he has found himself in Paris, where friendship and romance are on offer.

The Gershwin musical was first released as the 1951 film of the same name, which featured Gene Kelly in the Mulligan role (currently played by Ashley Day at the Dominion Theatre). It won six Academy Awards at the time, with nominations in two further categories, with its success making it a favourite of many during the 20th and 21st centuries.

It continues at its home of the Dominion Theatre in the mean time, but An American In Paris closes its doors there on Saturday 6th January 2018.

Meanwhile, Stomp is the famous percussive musical from Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas that has been a favourite of audiences around the world since it debuted in the early 1990s.

The show celebrated its 15th Birthday performance on Monday 25th September 2017, marking the occasion that the current West End run began at the Vaudeville Theatre in 2002 (it has since transferred to its current home of the Ambassadors Theatre).

Stomp utilises an array of household items to create a musical landscape, with bin lids, brooms and more used to create its percussive sound.

The production continues at the Ambassadors Theatre in London’s West End, with its current booking period taking it to Sunday 15th April 2018.
