Stomp Set to Close at the Ambassadors Theatre

Stomp - Ambassadors Theatre

Sad news to report from the West End today as it has been announced that Stomp, the long-running percussive musical from Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, will finally close its doors at the Ambassadors Theatre this January.

It has been at the West End venue since 2007 when it transferred there from the Vaudeville Theatre, becoming one the capital’s most famous shows in the process.

But like many long-running shows, it has finally decided to close its doors, meaning that it becomes a part of West End history alongside the likes of Cats, We Will Rock You, Jersey Boys and Billy Elliot The Musical, to name but a few, which are all long-running productions to close over the years.

But creators Cresswell and McNicholas have been keen to point out that the show could return down the line, saying “We want to emphasise that we don’t consider this the end of STOMP here;

“we actually feel it’s going to be good for the show to take a break, reconfigure, reinvent and return at some point in the future in a different London venue, where we can present the show in a way that is more in keeping with its original ethos.”

Cresswell and Nicholas have been working together for many years and worked for over a decade before unveiling Stomp back in 1991. Since then it has appeared around the world, beginning with venues in Edinburgh and London and progressing to international locations that have ensured its legacy going forward.

With that in mind there are going to be some shocked fans upon hearing today’s news, but based on the above comments its story isn’t over and we can look forward to a revamped revival.

For the time being, however, Stomp continues at the Ambassadors Theatre and it means that audiences have until the end of the year to witness it in the West End before it closes there on Sunday 7th January 2018. There is no word yet on what show is going to replace it there, but news is likely to emerge in the weeks and months ahead.
