Take That Musical The Band headed to the Theatre Royal Haymarket

The Band - Theatre Royal Haymarket

It won’t come as much of a surprise for audiences to hear that another jukebox musical is headed to the capital – 2018 brings Tina: The Tina Turner Story and the return of Bat Out Of Hell after all – but the choice of venue might raise a few eyebrows.

This is because The Band, the musical that celebrates boy band Take That, is headed to the Theatre Royal Haymarket – usually the home to prestigious and historical plays.

It means the West End venue will have a change of pace in December, when the show opens, as it presents a story that focuses on the ups and downs of following a boy band whilst the hits of Take That are performed onstage.

That story first take us back to the early 1990s and focuses on a group of teenage girls who are fans of a high profile boy band, taking them through the highs and lows of adolescence. We then fastforward nearly three decades and witness how these friends come back together to experience this band all over again.

Many of Take That’s hits are performed, including Relight My Fire, The Flood, Greatest Day and Shine, amongst others.

The show has a book penned by Tim Firth, who has had a successful career penning musicals in the capital. He has been responsible for The Girls (working with Take That’s Gary Barlow), This Is My Family, Our House and Calendar Girls, amongst others. Such productions have earned numerous awards and nominations over the years.
As such he is a great choice to bring The Band to life in the capital, providing the book to a show that is directed by Kim Gavin and stars the likes of Alison Fitzjohn, Emily Joyce, Rachel Lumberg and Jayne McKenna, amongst others.

As has already been mentioned, the Theatre Royal Haymarket is usually the home to plays, with Frozen currently playing at the venue with Suranne Jones in a lead part. Life & Fate is set to follow it in May along with Moliere’s Tartuffe.

The Band is set to appear at the venue later in the year, opening at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on Saturday 1st December 2018, and continuing until January.
