Tom Hiddleston cast in Harold Pinter’s Betrayal at the Harold Pinter Theatre

Thursday, 15th Nov 2018

Hollywood superstar Tom Hiddleston will be the latest big name to join Jamie Lloyd’s Pinter At The Pinter Season in March as a new production of the late playwright’s Betrayal makes a welcome appearance. He follows in the footsteps of many big names to participate in the play, whilst also following on from the likes of Lee Evans, Danny Dyer and Martin Freeman, amongst others, who have appeared in prior shows as part of this season.

Betrayal is, of course, one of Harold Pinter’s most admired plays, and tells a complex story of marriage and its betrayal, with married couples Emma & Robert (Hiddleston) and Jerry & Judith facing dilemmas as Emma and Jerry have an affair. It is well known for reversing the chronology of events, so that we learn things backwards and truly get a sense of how these betrayals turn matters upside down.

The acclaimed play first emerged in 1978 and was allegedly inspired by Pinter’s own affair in the 1960s. It has since been staged around the world on countless occasions, including a return to London on its 20th anniversary in 1998, and remains a favourite amongst Pinter aficionados.

But the presence of Tom Hiddleston for this revival in 2019 will ensure even more attention for a show that already requires little. The Hollywood star has appeared in a wealth of high profile blockbuster films, including the Thor and Avengers films as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plus Kong: Island and War Horse, amongst others. Audiences will also remember his stage work in the likes of Hamlet at the Royal Academy Of Dramatic Art (a fundraising event), Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse, The Kingdom Of Earth at the Criterion Theatre and The Children’s Monologues at the Old Vic Theatre, amongst various others.

He commented on his new gig, saying “Betrayal is a masterpiece. Jamie Lloyd’s Pinter at the Pinter season is terrific and I am so pleased that he’s asked me to be part of it.”

Betrayal, directed by Jamie Lloyd, runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre as part of the Pinter At The Pinter Season from Tuesday 5th March 2019.
