Jesus Chris Superstar - open air theatre

It was only recently that we reported on the news that Tyrone Huntley would be joining the cast of Dreamgirls at the Savoy Theatre, but now news emerges of another high profile musical role as he is announced as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Open Air Theatre.

Huntley will begin his engagement with the Regent’s Park production during the summer before heading to the Savoy Theatre later in the year. For the Andrew Lloyd Webber favourite he is announced alongside other new names like David Thaxton, Anoushka Lucas, Cavin Cornwall, Phil King, Peter Caulfield, Joel Harper-Jackson and Sean Kingsley.
Together they all join the previously-revealed Declan Bennett, who takes on the title role of Jesus in the upcoming revival.

Jesus Christ Superstar is, of course, the classic musical from Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber that focuses on Christ in the last week of his life leading up to the crucifixion. Considerable attention is placed on Judas and with that in mind Tyrone Huntley will be playing a major role by joining the production.

As mentioned, Huntley will also be seen in Dreamgirls at the Savoy Theatre later in the year and the performer has previously appeared in numerous London theatre shows, including Book Of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Porgy And Bess at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and Memphis at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

And his fellow cast members have considerable experience as well. David Thaxton, who plays Pilate in the production, previously appeared in Candide at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Love Never Dies at the Adelphi Theatre, Passion at the Donmar Warehouse (winning an Olivier Award) and Les Misérables at the Queen’s Theatre, to name but a few.

For Jesus Christ Superstar they appear under the direction of the Open Air Theatre Artistic Director Timothy Sheader, whilst Drew McOnie provides choreography.

The musical opens at the venue in July and is one of many shows announced for its summer season, which also includes Henry V, Pride And Prejudice and Running Wild.
