UK Tour Announced For Of Mice and Men

Wednesday, 13th Jan 2016

A brand new tour of the classic Of Mice and Men play is due to open at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre next month followed by a UK tour. Presented by both the Touring Consortium Theatre Company and Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the production will be directed by Artistic Director Roxana Silbert and star William Rodell and Kristian Phillips in the leading roles of George and Lennie.

The story focuses around the two migrant workers who land a job at a ranch following their chequered history of employment given Lennie’s shortcomings. George is a strong character whereas Lennie has limited mental abilities and a heavy hand, leading to recurring instances of animals, and people, being hurt. He has a good heart but unfortunately, as the story reveals, the people around him are not so forgiving.

The hit Broadway production was also the first US theatre production to be broadcast live to cinemas around the world by National Cinema Live. Filmed on stage in New York, UK audiences were given another opportunity to relive the heartfelt and deeply poignant performances by James Franco and Chris O’Dowd, who played the characters of George and Lennie, with encore cinemas screenings in November last year.

The Broadway show was fantastically produced and both Franco and O’Dowd proved they can turn their hand to any dramatic production. There was also a clear sense of genuine friendship between the pair of actors, a theme that echoes throughout the script, making it hard to not to feel really sorry for Lennie’s unfortunate end.
