The Theatreland Transfer of the Royal Shakespeare Company Production in the Autumn

Back in January it was revealed that Broadway producers were travelling to the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon to witness the successful production of “Matilda”. The aim was to transfer the musical to a commercial theatre, either on Broadway or in the West End. Now confirmation has arrived, courtesy of What’s On Stage and Chortle, revealing that the show will indeed be West End-bound at the end of 2011 and that Theatre Tickets will be going on sale in May, with further details yet to be released.

No venue has been revealed for the show, but considering the multitude of musicals that have found success in the West End over the years, and the regularity in which new ones open (see “Rock Of Ages” or “Million Dollar Quartet” for the latest to appear) it is unlikely that they will struggle to find it a home. Even Matthew Warchus, the director of the production at the Courtyard Theatre, has a new show out this year in the form of “Ghost The Musical”, which is coming soon to the Piccadilly Theatre (after its run at the Manchester Opera House).

One of the selling points of the show, other than being based on the classic book by Roald Dahl, is the work carried out by comedian Tim Minchin. The well known musical comic is the lyricist for the show and has plenty of credits to his name to provide him with plenty of fans – from his appearances on shows like “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” and “Friday Night with Jonathan Ross” to his tours of one-man shows like “So F**king Rock Live”. He can be seen on stages around the country and has become enormously popular in recent years as television appearances and touring schedules continue.

In “Matilda” we meet the title character – a little girl with extraordinary powers – who uses her skills to put people in their place. From her desire to read books she has acquired a great deal of information and she puts this to the test by teaching her parents a lesson – one that punishes them in the same way they parents would normally punish their children.

Matilda appeared at the Courtyard Theatre until January 2011 and is due to appear in the West End in the Autumn.
