The Celebrated Musical Hits its Latest Milestone This Month at its Location in the West End

There are many milestones coming up in the capital for London theatre audiences to look forward to. Like last year when “Les Misérables” celebrated its 25th year with a special performance at the O2, “The Phantom of the Opera” will be celebrating its own quarter-century landmark at the Royal Albert Hall this October.

Then there’s “Wicked” that, whilst a long way off from the milestones reaches by the West End’s longest running musicals, has celebrated its 2000th performance at the Apollo Victoria Theatre on Saturday 2nd July 2011. The production – which is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire -  has been abundantly popular since it opened in September 2006 and will have been running in the West End for five years later in 2011. During this time it has become one of the biggest blockbuster musicals in town and is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

The story is set in the same universe as “The Wizard Of Oz”, which is also running in the West End at the London Palladium, and fills audiences in on prior events in the Land of Oz well before Dorothy took her trip down the yellow brick road. We meet two characters during childhood who have very different experiences in school; one is Glinda who is beautiful and popular and the other is Elphaba who is cursed with emerald green skin and shunned by the others. So what begins as a playground rivalry follows them into the world outside and threatens all of Oz as one grows up to be Glinda the Good Witch and the other Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West.

Elphaba is currently portrayed by Rachel Tucker, with Lousie Dearman as Glinda, plus additional cast members like Mark Evans, Clive Carter, Julie Legrand, Zoe Rainey, Julian Forsyth, Ben Stott, Chloe Taylor and Nikki Davis-Jones.

One of the next milestones in the West End will be “We Will Rock You”, which opened at the Dominion Theatre in May 2002 and will celebrate its 10th anniversary in May 2012. Previous milestones also include “The Lion King”, which celebrated 10 years at the Lyceum in 2009.

“Wicked” is at the Apollo Victoria Theatre and has extended its booking period to take it to Saturday 27th October 2012.
