Wicked musical to move to the big screen

Wednesday, 14th Jul 2010

The hit musical Wicked looks set to be given a big screen makeover, with producers currently looking for a director.

Based on the story behind the witches in the Wizard of Oz, the showstopping musical is an adaptation of the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

It has so far made $2 billion (£1.3 billion) at box offices worldwide and Universal, the company which is planning to make the movie, looks keen to get in on its success with a film version.

Set before the original Wizard of Oz story, it looks at the events that led up to the two characters becoming the good and the bad witch.

Musical numbers from the show including No Good Deed and As Long As You're Mine have become firm favourites with theatregoers since it premiered in the UK in September 2006.

Fans of the musical who cannot wait that long can see it playing at the Apollo Victoria theatre in the heart of London, where it is scheduled to run until at least April 30th 2011.
